Rick O Hernandez is a Veterinarian from Colombia with an MSc in veterinary sciences focused on animal welfare and behavior, and currently is a PhD candidate of Animal sciences at Purdue university. His research involves identifying novel indicators for animal welfare and the use of genomics to enhance welfare and resilience in livestock species.
Currently he is working on projects to test the effects of genomic selection for heat stress tolerance in pigs in commercial environments such as transport, and post weaning nursery, as well as understanding the genomic basis and different strategies to improve walking ability in poultry. Rick is a Fullbright scholar and has published research on different livestock species such as sheep, pigs and turkeys.
