Michael Galyean received his B.S. in Agriculture from New Mexico State University (NMSU) in 1973 and a M.S. in Animal Science (1975) and Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition (1977) from Oklahoma State University. He served for 13 years on the NMSU faculty on the main campus and for 6 years as Superintendent of the Clayton Livestock Research Center. He was Professor of Animal Science with West Texas A&M University for two years before beginning 26 years of service at Texas Tech University, where in 2006, he was named Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor. He served as the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech from 2012 to 2016 and as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2016 to 2021, after which he returned to the faculty in the Department of Veterinary Sciences. Dr. Galyean and his students and colleagues have authored 273 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous other scientific publications. Twenty-nine M.S. students, 33 Ph.D. students, and 9 post-doctoral research associates have worked under his guidance. He has extensive service to professional organizations, including serving as Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Animal Science and President of both the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. He also served as chair of the most recent National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle. Significant recognitions include the ASAS Fellow Award, the ASAS Morrison Award, the FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award, the ASAS Western Section Distinguished Service Award, and the Plains Nutrition Council Legends of Feedlot Nutrition Award.
